Set Suede as your default search

Make Suede the search engine your browser uses by default, so every search from the address bar goes to your private, ad-free results. There are two kinds of method, and which one you use depends on your browser:

  • Manual — add Suede as a search engine in your browser's own settings and mark it the default. This works today, on every browser, with no extra software, and it is the most reliable option.
  • Extension — install the Suede browser extension, which puts Suede one click away and, where the browser allows it, offers to set it as your default in one step. Available now for Chrome, Edge, Brave, Vivaldi and Opera, and for Firefox (desktop), and for Safari on iPhone and iPad; the Mac version of Suede for Safari is still in App Store review — that page says so.

Pick your browser

Browser / platform Recommended method Page
Chrome, Edge, Brave, Vivaldi, Opera (desktop) Extension now; manual also works Chrome & Chromium
Firefox (desktop & Android) Add-on now (desktop); manual on Android Firefox
Safari (Mac, iPhone, iPad) Suede Safari extension (redirect) Safari
Chrome for Android / anything else OpenSearch auto-discovery Android & auto-discovery

How searching from the address bar works

When Suede is your default engine, typing a query in the address bar opens https://suede.io/search?q=<your query>. Many browsers also show search suggestions as you type; Suede serves those privately from its own corpus (computed in memory, with no suggestion history tied to you) — see Custom / advanced for the suggestions endpoint.

A note on honesty

We would rather under-promise. The manual and OpenSearch methods on these pages work right now. Of the browser extensions, the Chrome Web Store, Edge Add-ons and Firefox Add-ons listings are published, and the Android app is on Google Play; Suede for Safari is on the App Store for iPhone and iPad; its Mac version is still in review, so the Safari page's Mac "install" steps stay marked coming soon until it is live.
