Chrome, Edge, Brave, Vivaldi & Opera

These are all Chromium browsers, so the steps are nearly identical. You have two options: the manual method (works today) and the Suede extension (coming soon).

Manual method — works today

This is the most reliable way, and it needs nothing extra.

Chrome

  1. Open Settings → Search engine → Manage search engines and site search (or paste chrome://settings/searchEngines into the address bar).
  2. Next to Site search, click Add.
  3. Fill in:
    • Search engineSuede
    • Shortcutsuede (a keyword you can type to search Suede on demand)
    • URL with %s in place of queryhttps://suede.io/search?q=%s
  4. Click Add, then open the menu next to Suede and choose Make default.

Edge

  1. Go to edge://settings/searchEngines (Settings → Privacy, search, and services → Address bar and search → Manage search engines).
  2. Click Add, then enter:
    • Search engineSuede
    • Shortcutsuede
    • URL with %s in place of queryhttps://suede.io/search?q=%s
  3. Click Add, then ⋯ → Make default next to Suede.

Brave, Vivaldi & Opera

The same idea, with slightly different menus:

  • Bravebrave://settings/searchEnginesAdd → set the URL to https://suede.io/search?q=%sMake default.
  • VivaldiSettings → Search → Add a new engine with Nickname suede and URL https://suede.io/search?q=%s, then tick Set as Default Search.
  • OperaSettings → Search engine → Manage search engines → Add with URL https://suede.io/search?q=%s, then Make default.

Suede extension — coming soon

The Suede Search extension registers Suede (with private suggestions) and offers to make it your default engine in one click — no manual URL entry.

Once published:

  1. Open the listing above and click Add to Chrome (the button is labeled for your browser).
  2. Confirm the prompt to add the extension.
  3. On Windows and macOS the extension can set Suede as your default engine directly; approve the change when the browser asks. (On Linux, Chromium does not let an extension change the default engine — use the manual method above; the extension still adds Suede to the list for one-click selection.)

Until the store listing is live, use the manual method above — it achieves exactly the same result.
